The shop

Four things, made carefully.

Everything here fits the press bed, which is 6.5 by 10 inches. That is the whole constraint, and it is the reason the line looks the way it does.

How it is made

Three passes, none of them quick.

01

The ground is painted

Watercolor is mixed each morning and washed across the sheet by hand, so the colour sits differently on every piece before a single letter is set.

02

The forme is locked up

Type and plates are set into a chase and locked tight. Nothing on the page can move after this, which is why proofs matter.

03

One sheet at a time

The platen closes, the impression goes deep into the cotton, and the sheet comes off to dry. Then it happens again, for every card in the run.

The press

A heavy old machine, still doing the finest work.

A cast-iron tabletop platen press, built to a tolerance nobody bothers with now. It prints a card at a time and it will not be hurried. Everything we sell has been through it.
